OBJECTIVES:

To provide the diagnosis and treatment bases of dental-skeletal anomalies associated with congenital orofacial malformations in each one of the Dentistry specialties. To discuss the therapeutic possibilities and limitations.  

To capacitate the student to develop research projects, aiming: 1) the evaluation of the effects of the different specialties’ interventions on the rehabilitation of cleft lip and palate patients; 2) the proposition and use of new techniques and technologies for helping the treatment optimization and rationalization aiming the reduction of the patient/family’s discomfort, costs, chair time and morbidity as well as the results stability. 

 

BACKGROUND:

Oral function and face/smile aesthetic rehabilitation are key elements of the multidisciplinary treatment of orofacial clefts, dictating its approaches and the sequence of therapeutic steps. Because of the dynamism of scientific advancement of the different specialties, it is necessary the constant evaluation of the current methods to open both the discussion and the research fields about the treatment rationalization and optimization.  

Therefore, the study of the different specialties’ approaches on the comprehensive rehabilitation of patients showing craniofacial anomalies must be part of the student’s post-graduation formation of this program. The discipline assumes the participation of guest specialists.

Performance, diagnosis and treatment applied to orofacial clefts rehabilitation in the Dentistry specialties

Literature seminars on dental rehabilitation of orofacial clefts, aiming the critical evaluation of the employed methodologies as well as the didactic and teaching practice
